Meeting Notes

I want to apologize for not having enough copies of the handouts printed out last night (and for the incredibly small font they were in for the ones who DID get a copy).  If you’d like to have a copy of the recipe and didn’t get one or if you’d just like a more legible copy, you can get them here:

I’m looking forward to trying LOTS of good porters for the CoC tasteoff next month!  You’ve still got time to brew a brown or robust porter so what are you waiting for?

This meting was a great start of the BJCP classes that kevin pratt is teaching.  It took us through the major off flavors/aromas in beer.

Posting this for Matt:

Hey gang,

If you weren’t at the DOZE meeting last Monday (6/25/07), you missed a good one. Doctor Scott began the meeting by acknowledging DOZE members who medaled in the final round of competition at the National Homebrewers Convention this month in Denver. They include:

Jon Plise- Bronze medal. English Pale Ale

Mike McDole- Silver medal, Fruit Beer

Scott Thomas- Bronze medal, Strong ale

Mike McDole- Bronze medal, Belgian Strong Ale

Scott Thomas- Silver medal, Belgian & Strong Ale

Eric Eigard- Bronze medal, Belgian & French Ale

Carlo Camarda- Bronze medal, India Pale Ale

David Avila- Bronze medal, American Ale

And last, but certainly not least, Jamil Zainasheff won the prestigious Ninkasi Award for the second time! Not to mention a Gold in the Bock category, a Gold in the English Brown, a Gold in the Sour Ale, and a Bronze in the Spice/Herb/Vegetable category. Jamil of course, competes as a member of the QUAFF club, but we bask a little in his glory because he is a DOZE member as well. Congratulations to all!

During Gadget Time this writer produced his pump enclosure. Consisting of an electrical junction box, a switch, a handle and some rubber feet, this gadget allows me to protect my pump from liquids and damage and helps keep me form being electrocuted.

Doctor Scott gave the Style Talk and this month the topic was Belgian Sour Ales. Doc elaborated on the unusual way these beers are brewed, the complexities of the flavors and aromas and of course, we sampled some excellent commercial examples. Very interesting, to say the least.

We scheduled a Summer Big Brew at Beer Beer & More Beer for the end of July. Stay tuned for more details.

Quite a meeting last night… Eric gave the style talk (BJCP 18E) and shared quite a few commercial examples as well as some of his own beer. Check out his website Eccentric Cellar Brewing for some recipies.

Doc got a large pile of “stuff” that seems to indicate DOZE did pretty well at the May Faire competition, congratulations to the usual suspects.

After the break, Sean Paxon showed off with a Rochefort brewery tour report from his recent Belgium trip. Lots of beautiful pictures and a very thorough report on one of Belgium’s historic breweries. Still waiting for permission to post his slides, but there’s more info and pictures from many other belgian breweries on his website: Homebrew Chef.

We also found out that DOZE will be hosting the Hoppy Hour at this year’s NCHF the theme for this year is “Wild Yeast Frenzy” — Lambics, Fruit Lambics, Sour Beers. Registration is open, sign up early Sean promises another impressive dinner: NCHF Registration

Since the May meeting falls on Memorial day, we are going to postpone it one week to June 4th. Still at More Beer. See you there.

Just a reminder that as of the January Meeting we will be gathering at B3 at 6:30pm for our normal socializing and milling about. We’re going to try and get down to business promptly at 7pm.

We will be collecting dues for 2006 membership ($30 cash or check).

The August meeting was held Monday the 29th at the EJ Phair Alehouse. Club vice president Curtis Pehl presided, as Doctor Scott had a death in his family and was unable to attend. The club’s condolences go out to Doctor Scott and his family.

Everybody enjoys
club meetings at EJ Phair.

There were a couple
of new faces at this meeting. Jeff and Mike. Welcome to the club! If you
have questions about membership, Aaron T. Porter is our Membership Chairman.
He can be reached at atporter@primate.net.

Jeff and Mike
fit right in at their first DOZE meeting.

The Style Talk was
given by Reagan Dillon and the subject
was mead. Reagan gave a short lecture and then poured some of his own
examples of the style. Next month’s Style Talk will be on pilseners and
will be presented by Chris Graham.

Gadget Time featured
two items, one rather unusual and the other very practical. The first
was Vince Garcia’s milk can fermentor.
Vince has modified a stainless steel milk can to accept an airlock and
seal it’s lid securely. At presstime, Vince had yet to try his creation
but will report on it’s performance as soon as he does.

Item two was a heavy
duty stand for a 5# CO2 bottle, built by Erik
Beer
. Erik attaches his bottle to the stand by means of a large hose
clamp.

For the New Stuff
at B3
portion of the meeting , Jason Petros talked
about several new kits at the store, one being a saison and the other
being a 10th Anniversary stout kit. B3 also plans to introduce a line
of "Club Series" kits. These would be a signature kit representing
a particular club (like ours!) and a portion of each sale would go back
to that club. Sounds like a great idea. This writer thinks there are several
DOZE brewers who could provide worthy recipes.

B3 will also soon
be stocking a new plate type wort chiller. Similar to The Therminator,
it will retail for less than $100.

New toy chills
wort on the cheap!

There was no Tech
Talk segment this month..

There was no Competition
Report this month.
