Club Competitions

The DOZE entry in the September/October Club Only Competiton picked up a 3rd place!
Congratulations to Scott Lothamer and Justin Crossley for their “Black Peter”!

The upcoming November/December comp is Pilsners with Dark Lagers coming up really quickly in January.

Congrats to Erik Beer, his Irish Red will be our entry to the March/April club only competition. The next round is extract beers, any BJCP style as long as extract makes up 50% or more of the fermentables.
With an open category, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t have at least a dozen entries to choose from. Entries are due 4/28/07, the weekend before our April meeting, so have your beer for judging in March.

In addition to Jon’s awesome achievement, DOZERS came through with a whopping 35 out of 68 medals awarded!! Way to go Jon and congrats to all DOZERS for bringing it strong. Results here.

Reminder: NHC 1st Round Entries are due Friday 4/14.

Bring 1 bottle for first round, and store 3 for second round incase you place.

Go here for printing out entry labels(PDF)

Check the BJCP site for the category list

If you are entering, please email Jonathan with the amount you are
entering. This way DOZE can have a tally of total entries entered.

Good Luck, and may the Beer Gods be strong with DOZErs!

Just a reminder about some of the upcoming competitions:

  • National Homebrew Competition 1st round
  • California State Fair
  • 10th Annual Silver Dollar Fair
  • Titletown Open XII
  • Trash XVI
  • 15th Annual Green Mountain Homebrew Competition
  • Maltose Falcons Mayfaire

Be sure and check out the homebrew competition calendar (there’s a link “Foz’s Homebrew Calendar” over there on the right side of the page) for details on upcoming competitions. If you’ve never entered a competition before and are curious, there are some great opportunities coming up. Feel free to ask for help if you need to know how to enter, how to pack, ship your beers, etc.

In addition, the next NHC Club Only Competition is extract-only brews. You have to have 50% or more of your fermentables from extracts. The entry deadline for that is May 12th, so we should probably judge that at the April meeting… all you extract brewers, this is your chance to shine up your kettles, show the all-grainers a thing or two and kick some ass!

Congratulations to Gary Foster! His 70/- Heavy wins it with a 43/50 score! Gary has placed 5 or 6 times with his Scottish Schillings this year, all Golds and Silvers. I don’t know the exact number, but I know he is kicking some serious ass. Well done!

Thanks to Jason, Chris, and James of B3 for taking their time to taste the beers, and to JJ and Morgan at EJ Phair for setting up the competition.

Judging sheets are in the B3 showroom, talk to Jon if you’re interested.

There were a total of 11 entries. 7 Irish reds, and 4 Scottish Schillings.
Overall the average score for beers entered was 38.
Scottish Ales average score was 35.25. Irish Red Ale average score was 33.5.
There were two beers that scored over 40!

Overall Doze makes “Excellent” beer according to the BJCP Scoring Guide.
Look out NHC first round! DOZE is bringing it strong

B3 is a drop off for all the these. Jon has flyers in the showroom for you next time you’re in.

World Cup due 2/25
Celebrewtion due 3/4
National Homebrewers Conference due 4/14
Alameda County Fair due 4/29

DOZERs please email Jon what Beers you plan on entering, and what categories for NHC 2006. He would like to get a rough count for the clubs sake, and refrigeration space needed etc.

EJ Phair is going to have a brew off between DOZE members in 2006. Whoever brews the most flavorful Scottish / Irish Ale, will have their recipe brewed at a 15 barrel capacity. That is 465 gallons of your beer on tap at EJ Phair’s Ale House.

Have your beer ready by March 1st 2006 for a tasting date to be announced in 2006.

Check out BJCP Category 9; The qualifying category numbers are:
9A Scottish Light 60-
9B Scottish Heavy 70-
9C Scottish Export 80-
9D Irish Red Ale
9E (Not accepted)

You must be a registered member of DOZE to enter. Pay your $30 dues at the January Meeting. E-Mail Jonathan Plise with any questions.
