Researchers resurrect new species of life from ancient Andean tomb

Close to 1,500 years ago, indians living in what is now Quito, Ecuador buried their most revered dead in 16-meter-deep tombs. An ancient alcoholic beverage was commonly included in these burial vaults. Now, by examining the clay vessels used to ferment and store this brew, a team of South American researchers has managed to not only recover the microbes the indians used to ferment the ancient beverage, they’ve actually revived them…and they’re unlike any species they’ve ever seen.

As discussed in the January meeting, DOZERS have been invited to a get together at the Sudwerk Brewery Dock Store in Davis this Sunday.

The Dock Store is a small tasting room in the brewery with four taps to show off recent creations from the Sudwerk brewers.  The doors at 2pm and keep pouring until at least 7pm.  I am not sure what beers they will have but be be beers not likely to be found anywhere else.  Sudwerk is anticipating 60+ attendees though numbers are difficult to estimate.  We’re encouraged to bring beer to share.

The Sudwerk Dock Store is just inside the big roll up doors to the north of the restaurant door at 2001 2nd Street in Davis.

Each brewery had at least one beer for tasting, either on tap, in a bottle or a can. “We have 11 different styles of beer on tap today,” said Patrick Baxley of DOZE. “The event gives us a chance to show off a few of our homebrews, and to be on the same level as some of the big guys at the event.”

A new study from the University of Granada in Spain indicates that beer, in moderation, does as good a job at rehydrating one’s body and replacing needed minerals as does drinking water.

A study presented today in Brussels (Belgium) shows that moderate consumption of beer after practicing physical exercise is as effective as drinking water for rehydration and recovery, experts say.

Dr. Manuel Castillo, of the University of Granada , presented the results of the tests conducted with a group of young men, which consisted of measuring the body’s reaction to the ingestion of water or beer after strenuous physical exertion .

“We conducted the study to see if the widespread custom of taking a beer after exercise was something desirable or not,” Castillo said during his presentation, concluding that two-thirds of a beer “is not a problem that harms the rehydration is occurs after exercise. ”

In that sense, it found that the fermented beverage would be “just as if you drank water,” and recommended its use to all people who have no contraindications….
